Plantar Fasciitis / Heel Pain
Arch and Heel pain is termed Plantar faciitis - from the Latin “plantar”, sole of the foot, “fasci”, connective tissue, and “itis”, inflammation. Plantar Fasciitis is a common condition where the muscle running from the heel bone to the big toe is inflammed. This condition is caused my a large number of factors such as an increase in activity, a change in shoe-wear or a previous injury
Pain is most prevalent first thing in the morning, after sitting down for a period of time or after a long period of walking or activity .
Treatment:
There are a number of treatment options for this painful condition that treat both the cause and symptoms of the pain and the symptoms.
Treatment to correct this condition varies with each person depending on the severity and duration of the condition and the shape and structure of ones foot. Common treatment modalities include a set of stretching exercises, palliative treatments such as ice, heat, massage and a reduction in activity . Anti-inflammatory creams and tablets such as Ibuprofen can be used to reduce swelling.
The most effective treatment is to prescipe a set of custom made prescriptive orthotics to relieve the pressure placed on the plantar fascia and to control the foot during the gait cycle.
