COMMON FOOT COMPLAINTS
Achilles Tendonitis
This condition is a painful and often debilitating inflammation of the achilles tendon. The achilles is the largest and strongest of all the body’s tendons which is attached to the heel and extends up into the calf muscle. The achilles provides the ability to rise up onto our toes, thus allowing us to walk and ultimately run.
There are 3 stages of tendonitis; Peritenonitis (local pain during or after activity); Tendinosis (does not cause symptoms but can cause swelling or a hard knot of tissue in the calf muscles); and Peritenonitis with Tendinosis (a painful condition resulting in swelling in activity and can cause a partial or total rupture of the tendon).
Treatment
Treatment depends on the severity of the problem. If general heel pain, tenderness, inflammation or discomfort in the lower leg occurs, then all physical activities should be suspended. Custom-made footbeds (orthotics) might be prescribed to provide some relief.
RICE (Rest, Ice, Compression, Elevation) is always a regime that will ultimately resolve the symptoms and a proper stretching regime can be also diagnosed as a preventative for the condition. Anti inflammatory creams and tablets can also be used.
A flexible cast can be used to immobilise the ankle and protect the Achilles, usually lasting for 8 weeks.
If ruptured, then surgery is required with some intensive rehabilitation usually lasting for about 6-10 weeks ; normal activities can usually be resumed within 3 months
